JOHN GIORNO - VINYL PAINTINGS

ART BASEL - FEATURE

June 17-22, 2025 - HALL 2.0 | BOOTH D02

For the Feature section of Art Basel 2025 Thomas Brambilla Gallery, in collaboration with Giorno Poetry System, is proud to present a solo show by American artist and poet John Giorno (1936-2019) titled " Vinyl Paintings”.
The project entails installing white large mural writing by Giorno on each of the gray walls and six rare, museum-quality vinyl paintings from 1989 will be positioned above them. These are the very first works he ever created and among the most significant in his oeuvre.
This limited series was realized in Italy in the Eighties, produced with the esteemed publisher and patron Francesco Conz in Udine. It was during the pivotal collaboration that Giorno began to explore and solidify his career as visual artist. Each piece in the series was produced in a limited edition of 8, featuring silkscreens on canvas painted with vinyl paint. The words he chose to display —fragments of poems that embody his philosophical reflections— become mantras of a sort, transformed into visual statements mixed with pop-infused visual sensibility.
The project for Feature 2025 by Thomas Brambilla Gallery and Giorno Poetry System Foundation is a powerful statement that presents the relevance and historical significance of John Giorno’s artistic practice. It highlights the fruitful intersection between poetry and visual art.
